How To Be Positive in Difficult Times
A positive attitude is a great way to weather tough times. But it takes an enormous amount of time, effort, and commitment to be mindful of your thoughts and actions when times are difficult and life has dealt you a raw deal
Keep things in perspective. Recognize that people have triumphed through unimaginable difficulties throughout history, so you can too. Define yourself by your character, not what you have or don’t have. Learn all you can about others who triumphed over adversity. Look to great leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. or Abraham Lincoln, as well as the many unnamed people in history who endured slavery, genocide, war and poverty, and still lived to tell about it. The fact that people have survived so much is a testament to the power of the human spirit. Remember them in hard times and you will prevail.
Avoid negative people: It’s natural to feel anger, jealousy, and resentment when you’re stuck in a less than fortunate situation. However, when you get in bad situations and tough times, avoid being around negative people or miserable people who can only end up making you feel worse and who can fuel your anger, jealousy, resentment and misery
You have it in you: Although things may be looking bad, look inside yourself and cull out the angry, resentful, or jealous thoughts and focus on how to deal with the situation. Instead of focusing on the problem or difficulty look for the solution that will overcome the problem.
Focus on your skills and visualize yourself doing what needs to be done. Look in the mirror and tell yourself “Although this is a tough time, I am a survivor, I am strong, I will get through this, I will get past this situation in my life.” Take it one step at a time, one day at time.
Surround yourself with positive people: It’s always good to be around uplifting family and friends for support. If you don’t have family and friends around, join support groups in order to keep a positive attitude. Use spiritual guidance or look to a higher power or your religion for guidance in helping to keep a positive outlook. Understand that every one has some sad times. Don’t feel bad if you can’t be positive at all times. Using Yoga or meditation helps.
